In his original oil painting entitled “Squelettes se disputant un hareng-saur”, (Skeletons fighting over a pickled herring), Ensor depicts two opposing ideological forces fighting for the same piece of meat. One donning a Catholic cardinal’s robe, the other in a military headgear suggesting the perennial struggle for power between church and state. With this ‘great tug of war’ being recontextualized in the May 4th, 1970 peace march at Kent State University, I find a valid corollary in this heated historic clash between unarmed anti-war advocates and the American military.
